Kususa is an electronic dance DJ and producer duo originating from Durban, South Africa, consisting of Joshua Sokweba, known as “Kunzima Theology” and Mncedi Tshicila, known as “Samurai Yasusa.” They create Electronic dance music containing elements of house, afro beat, techno and African music. The duo’s name is both a combination of the pair’s stage names and a word which, when roughly translated into the Southern African language of Shona, means “to start over.” Their music catalogue is spread throughout labels such as Universal Music Group South Africa, Ultra Music, Armada BV, Defected Music, Get Physical, Cadenza, Moblack, and their newly formed label Back Noise Music Africa. Over the years, they have performed in various countries around the globe, having shared stages with world-renowned artists such as Black Coffee, Henrik Schwarz, Monolink, Themba, Zakes Bantwini, &Me, Guy Mantzur, Manoo and Innellea, as well as performing on the Resistance Stage at Ultra South Africa 2019. They have graced the Mixmag Issue Cover back in 2019, shinning light on Africa’s Electronic Music exports then went to perform on the Mixmag The Lab Johannesburg the same year.
Kususa’s accolades include being on the Traxsource top 100 Afro House Artists consecutively from 2017 – 2021 peaking #13 in 2018. They also hold 7 Dance Music Awards South Africa nominations, having over a million streams annually. 2022 saw the duo bag their first commercial success with the hit “Asanda” which they co-produced with Argento Dust and has Zakes Bantwini lacing hynoptic vocals. It peaked at #1 on the national radio station Metro FM and remained on the top 10 of RadioMonitor over the summer of that year. In 2023, Kususa went on to be recognized by Metro FM with three nominations for their hit track, with the music video amassing over a million views on YouTube.
